As you know my natural hair is short and afro curly, as a black women how to wash short curly natural human hair, the following i will share the black women hair wash day routine for you.
Wash day routine
1. Rinse hair with warm water
I start by rinsing my hair to loosen the products i applied throughout the week and i use warm water to help the shampoo penetrate my hair and scalp for a thorough cleanse
2.Lather a small amount of shampoo through hair, while gently massaging scalp with fingertips
It is about five minutes to stimulate my scalp and encourage hair growth, i’m currently using shea moisture’s raw shea butter moisture retention shampoo, i’m trying to get in the habit of using no more than a nickel size amount of shampoo, because a little really does go a long way, but i instantly noticed that the shampoo was a bit diluted, so i used a little more.
I prefer shampoo that is more creamy which leaves my hair feeling more smooth and moisturized, but overall this shampoo does well like cleansing my hair without leaving it feeling dry or rough to touch, like some shampoos i’ve used in the past. so i’ll definitely continue to use the shampoo unless i find something creamier.
3.Rinse hair with warm water and cleanse again
I’ve already shampooed my hair once, so here’s the final cleanse, i like the shampoo twice to ensure that my scalp and hair are thoroughly cleansed of dirt and product buildup.

4. Lather a small amount of conditioner through hair
After i thoroughly rinse my scalp and hair i follow up with conditioner to moisturize my hair, i’m using shea moisture’s raw shea butter moisture retention conditioner, i actually use a generous amount of this conditioner, because it’s super thick so i just apply a little extra, so i can evenly distribute it throughout my hair and i absolutely love this conditioner it’s super creamy and moisturizing which makes my hair feel soft and much easier to detangle. After i apply the conditioner throughout my hair, i use a conditioner cap for deep conditioning while i shower.
5. Detangle hair
After about five to ten minutes, i detangle my hair here’s where i can usually tell whether or not my conditioner is something i keep or something i switch for something different, because if my conditioner is not thick enough and if it doesn’t provide enough slip for my comb to easily glide through my hair, i have to replace it with something thicker and creamier especially as my hair gets longer, since it’s tightly coiled and tangles easily, i need enough slippers, so that my hair detangles easily this conditioner definitely works for me, even when i switch up shampoos, i still come back to this conditioner.
6. Thoroughly rinse hair with cool water
Once my hair is fully detangled, i thoroughly rinse with cool water to seal in the moisture for shiny and healthy looking hair, once i’m finished i use my hands to pat down and squeeze my hair between my fingers in order to wring out the excess water, i never use a towel, since my hair is short when i get out of the shower, i allow my hair to air dry a bit, while i dry off and put on my undergarments, afterwards i wear a conditioner cap to keep my hair moist while i get dressed.

7. Style
Since i usually style my hair while it’s wet, i usually wear my hair in slick down styles or wash and gos here’s an example of a complete wash and go style on day one, usually by day three or four my hair looks flat and frizzy, so i co-wash and style again.
Co-wash Day routine
1. Rinse hair with warm water
2. Apply a small amount of conditioner through hair while gently massaging scalp with fingertips
I usually just use whatever my go-to conditioner is at the time, i’m use shea moisture’s raw shea butter moisture retention conditioner again, in place of shampoo in order to remove old products and refresh my hair, even though i may co-wash my hair once or twice a week to maintain a fresh wash and go, i never shampoo my hair more than once a week, that way i avoid stripping my hair of moisture.
3. Rinse hair with warm water
I co-wash my hair the same way, i would normally shampoo my hair basically a quick rinse with warm water and cleansing twice, i’ve already cleaned once so here’s the final cleanse to ensure that i’ve removed all product buildup. i also take advantage of this time to gently massage and stimulate my scalp for at least five minutes, since i don’t manipulate my hair much once it’s styled.

4. Detangle hair
lastly i detangle my short curly natural human hair, since it’s already been moisturized and softened, while the hair was being cleansed by the conditioner.
What is the difference between wash day and co-wash day
The only difference between wash day and co-wash day is after co-washing my hair, i don’t deep condition i simply co-wash detangle and then rinse my hair since, the only purpose of the co-wash is to remove old product and refresh my hair for a new style without stripping my hair of moisture.
5. Thoroughly rinse hair with cool water
After i thoroughly rinse my hair with cool water, i use my hands to wring out the excess water and instead of using a towel, i cover my hair with a conditioner cap to keep my hair moist.;
Style: Wash and go
1. Use rosewater as a moisturizer
I style my hair while it’s wet. regardless of whether i shampoo or co-wash my hair, i usually use rose water as a moisturizer
2. Apply jojoba oil to seal in the moisture
3. Apply shea moisture curl enhancing smoothie

4. Apply gel throughout hair using fingers and the palm of hands in a circular motion to define curls
As a moisturizing curl definer to prevent my hair from getting crunchy, since i used a lot of gel to style my hair. In order to define my curls, i apply gel throughout my hair using my fingers and the palm of my hands in a circular motion, i typically use eco style gel, but i decided to use shea moisture’s curling gel souffle, just to switch things up, but this gel didn’t define my hair as quickly, it actually took me a few seconds to soften the product in my hand, before applying it to my hair and i had to manipulate my hair a little longer just to define the curls.
5.Finger coil small sections to reduce frizz
Once i fully define my hair as much as i can with my hands, i’ll go in and finger coil small sections to help reduce frizz, i also use the end of a rat silk comb to separate the curls so that there are no sparse areas.
6. Re-wet edges with rosewater and use gel to smooth down edges.
And of course to complete the look, i’m just going to re-wet my hair with my rose water and follow up with some gel, to lay down these edges shout out to all y’all baby hair connoisseurs out there, because i’m trying to get on your level, sometimes this can be like hit or miss, i have to like keep going over it again and again, to make sure i got it, but basically i just comb my hair down, hold it in place with my finger and pull the hair back with the comb and i just keep playing with it using the rat style comb, until i get the finished look i want.
