You can’t dye synthetic hair or can you today i am so excited to be bringing you this topic, because sometimes we take a piece out of the box and the color is just not right and when you’re talking about synthetic hair, it’s very difficult to change that color or so i thought.
The six different products, Which synthetic hair wig dy works the best
We’re trying six different products that you can find either on amazon or just at your local market or target and today we’re finally going to answer the question, can you really dye synthetic hair with rit dye? can you dye synthetic hair with adore hair dye? or can you dye synthetic hair with any other kind of commercially available out of the box hair color?
I’m not a hair stylist, so you’ll notice that my color techniques probably could use some work, so i actually don’t do color, but today we are going to be attacking dyeing a synthetic wig at home and so these are all good products that you can get very very easily.
We are going to be looking at professional hair color such as the adore and arctic fox hair color, we are also going to be trying a couple of fabric dyes we’re going to be using rit dye and dylon fabric dye and i see this question asked a lot by beginner, can i tone synthetic hair? especially if your wig is a little bit more of a golden tone , you’re thinking that you might want to do like a blue toner to it.
we are going to use a toner and your standard box hair color for most of these, i’m using very bright hot pink shades, because i want to see how well the color imparts . i didn’t want to try this out with one of the pieces, that i’d like to wear again someday. So i picked up a pack of extensions from amazon and these extensions were only about $20 and i did make sure that these were non-diable synthetics. My hope is that i will try it out and find something that works, it’ll be something that i will be able to use in the future on one of my more daily wear wigs.
Let’s get into dyeing a synthetic wig at home not only am i going to be evaluating six different kinds of dyes for synthetic hair i’m also going to be evaluating two different methods for each so i’m going to be doing, each extension in a solution of either conditioner and the dye or a water method where you dissolve the dye in some water, so in both of those applications, i’m going to be using about the same amount of dye, but the only difference is going to be whether or not it was applied with a conditioner and in my case.
I will use a cheap bamboo conditioner, so all we’re really trying to evaluate is the same amount of dye and pigment, but does the method the water method or the conditioner method apply that dye better.
Conditioner method – SYNTHETIC HAIR WIGs Dye works THE BEST
For the conditioner method, i have about a half a cup of conditioner and i am going to apply the dye into the conditioner and using a brush i am going to mix it together until it is fully incorporated once everything is fully mixed i am going to spread this out over the extensions and remember i am not a hair stylist so this is not a a dyeing tutorial because you’ll see in the results how well i did here so i lay out the extensions and i am spreading a really thick layer because i want to like totally saturate the extensions with this die and then i actually am going to also flip it over and i am going to apply the conditioner to the other side as well so that i make sure every part of the strand is covered and then i’m going to fold it up into a piece of foil so that it stays protected from the other half which is going into a water bath.
Water method – SYNTHETIC HAIR WIGs Dye works THE BEST
For the water method, we’re going to be doing the same thing, except this time i am using a bowl of water and i am adding the color, then i am going to stir that through, so that i completely incorporate it, in this case the water method was actually a little bit more difficult to dissolve the professional hair color, it took me quite a bit of stirs, but once i did finally get it incorporated, i went ahead and i applied the remainder of the extension into the water bath and i let it sit there.
During the time that the color was processing i did both of these methods for the arctic fox, the adore, the Dylon fabric die and the Rit. I allowed the pieces to soak or sit in the conditioner as well for a total of 40 minutes, and allowed the toner, the box hair dye 40 minutes to process as well.
Result – SYNTHETIC HAIR WIGs Dye works THE BEST
l’oreal perference – which SYNTHETIC HAIR WIGs Dye works THE BEST
- Used developer and color from box
- Allowed to process overnight
- Color did develop slightly on synthetic hair
- Color developed heavily on threads sewing clips
- Overall could be an option for coloring roots, if you bleach the lace after coloring
l’oreal preference hair color in the box what’s super interesting is that this box hair color has barely even developed after 40 minutes, it barely looks brown except for the area at the clips where the fabric is actually turning colors. so this one really surprised me this is the box hair color and on the very far left, i left a strand of the original extension and you can see that actually even though it didn’t turn the color to be dark brown like the box suggested the extensions did take up a little bit of color.
If you wanted to add a root to a synthetic piece and you are willing to leave this die on for a significant amount of time. I ended up leaving this one on um overnight it will actually take some of the color, even though it’s just a little bit just be prepared for your lace to get dark again with this one, i just did the bottle straight out of the box, so there was no water method or conditioner method, it seems like it took the color pretty consistently just very lightly.
Adore haircolor -which SYNTHETIC HAIR WIGs Dye works THE BEST
- Used conditioner and water method

- Color did Not develop on synthetic hair
- Color developed heavily on threads sewing clips
This was another one that totally shocked me, even though i left it on for about 40 minutes, the only thing that turned pink was actually the area where the clips are sewn in. There’s like a couple pink splotches, which was probably cross contamination from the dylon dye, but all in all the strands themselves barely took up any of this very vibrant color. I also did do both the water method and the conditioner method and it doesn’t appear that either of those methods helped dye this synthetic hair with the adore hair dye.
Artic fox haircolor – which SYNTHETIC HAIR WIGs Dye works THE BEST

- Color did Not develop on synthetic hair
- Color developed heavily on threads sewing clips
I wanted so much for this one to work, because it is arctic fox and they have such beautiful vibrant colors, you will see that this one also did not pick hardly any of the color up from that arctic fox. It does again, look like there is maybe some cross contamination in my brush from one of the fabric dies, because there’s just a couple little splotches, but for the most part, neither the water method or the conditioner method put any of the pigmentation from the arctic fox hair dye onto the strands. The only thing that got dyed were the areas where the clips were sewn in.
Kristin ess rose gold toner – which SYNTHETIC HAIR WIGs Dye works THE BEST

- Color did Not develop on synthetic hair
This is the kristen s rose gold temporary tint spray and now after seeing the arctic fox. And how such a vibrant permanent color did absolutely nothing to those strands, i am kind of not surprised that the temporary tint toning spray also did not do anything to these strands. It actually didn’t even dye. The string that is sewing the clips and the extensions in together as many of the other pieces did. In fact, it looks like i didn’t even do anything to this set of extensions.
Dylon fabric dye – which SYNTHETIC HAIR WIGs Dye works THE BEST
- Used conditioner and water method
- Allowed to process 40 min
- Color did develop on synthetic hair
- Color also developed on threads sewing clips
- Would use again with better dissolving techique
Now we finally get to one that works. we finally have a pink set of extensions and believe it or not, this was the fabric dye, this was the dylon, flamingo pink and while this one did take up the color a lot, the powder form that it comes in was very very difficult for me to mix and dissolve. It had tons of crystals, while i really thought that i had it all incorporated apparently, i did not because this color is very very splotchy.
So while this worked great and it gave a really nice hot pink color that i was looking for, in the future, if i try this again. i would definitely just make sure that i incorporate the color much better, even though the area where the clips are sewn does seem to have taken up quite a bit of dye. I think that that’s probably because that area was sitting maybe where there were more crystals formed at the bottom.
The water method doesn’t appear to have imparted as much pigment into the extensions as the bottom area, which was the conditioner method. That seems to definitely have picked up more color and a more even color almost like i got a better incorporation of the dye using conditioner versus water.
RIT fabric dye – which SYNTHETIC HAIR WIGs Dye works THE BEST

- Color developed well on Synthetic hair
- Color did develop on threads sewing clips
- Color was different than what iexpected based on packaging
Last but not least was the highest performer and i was really really surprised by this, so this one we dyed the synthetic hair with the rit dye and this was in the color fuchsia. This one actually it appears that the water method performed better. The color is darker, it’s richer and it really dissolved quite easily in the water which actually, if you read the package instructions water is the way that they say to dye fabric. So the color is very very even, it is just not as vibrant as the other shades or what i was expecting for a fuchsia, but overall this looks really really good.
I found this to be super interesting, even when the strands themselves did not pick up the color, the string and the fabric that’s used to tie the extensions to the clips. Most of those did take the colors, so you can kind of think of that like your lace ,if you have a lace wig that is going to take up the color, even if your strands don’t.
